EMG objects to The New York Times correspondent

Yangon, June 11, 2012
(Eleven Media Group) - The Eleven Media Group of Myanmar strongly objects to The New York Times correspondent Thomas Fuller for a paragraph he has written.
The New York Times posted the article “Crisis in Myanmar over Buddhist-Muslim Clash” written by Thomas Fuller on its website on 10 June.
He wrote “In one sign that passions are running high, the Web site of the Eleven Media Group, a publisher of one of the country’s leading weekly newspapers, displayed a string of hateful comments about Muslims from readers.
“Terrorist is terrorist,” wrote one reader who signed in as Maungpho. “Just kill them.’’, in the article.

The EMG, which has been reporting news about the riots in time, strongly objects to The New York Times correspondent Thomas Fuller for a paragraph he has written as it may cause misconceptions about the EMG among its international readers and the public.
“His articles on democratic transition in Myanmar are negative. The editors of The New York Times should examine his articles carefully. We do not write about religion or race. We are reporting the news covered by our reporters on the scene to prevent undesirable outcomes due to inaccurate coverage of the riots by foreign media. At a time like this, we cannot accept such kind of criticism. It may cause misconceptions about the EMG among our international readers. We object to Thomas Fuller and the board of editors of The New York Times,” said Chief Editor Wai Phyo of the Weekly Eleven News Journal.
The EMG has allowed its readers to comment on the riots with complete freedom to reflect the public opinion over the latest developments in Rakhine State on its website.
In addition, the EMG is reporting news about clashes not between Buddhist Rakhine nationals and local Muslims, but between ethnic Rakhine nationals and Bengali Rohingyas.
However, some foreign media reported inaccurate news about the riots in Rakhine State. The EMG has already issued its stance on the riots in a public statement.
In the statement, the EMG has already made it clear that The Eleven Media Group will continue presenting the most reliable news for the benefits of the State and the public. Foreign media such as the BBC and the AFP should mention exactly that Bengali Rohingyas are not involved in Myanmar national ethnics. The reporting on Myanmar ethnic affairs should be accurate to avoid racial violence.
Thomas Fuller is also the author of articles about Myanmar written from negative point of view.
In his articles about Myanmar like ''Myanmar Leader May Be at Odds With Aung San Suu Kyi'', ''Hints of a Rift Between Myanmar’s Political Reformers’’ that caused Thai and Myanmar governments to clarify their stances because he wrote that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Thai trip had strained the relationship between President U Thein Sein and Chairperson of the National League for Democracy Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who are considered main leaders of democratic transition in Myanmar.
